The mainstream music scene has been on fire recently, especially after Taylor Swift's Midnights was released this past Friday. Even more, stars are coming out to play, as Drake and 21 Savage announced a collaboration album titled Her Loss. This news went public after a video was posted to social media featuring the two artists, confirming previous speculations.
Her Loss was originally set to release on Friday, October 29th, as stated in the original announcement video. Thursday, however, Drake updated fans through his Instagram story that his producer "40" contracted COVID-19 while adding the finishing touches to the album. Due to this, Her Loss will now be released on Friday, November 4th.
Before the release of this album, Drake and 21 Savage collaborated on 4 songs over the past 6 years. The first was "Sneakin'" back in 2016, which peaked at 28 on the Billboard Hot 100. The next time these two worked together was in 2020, when "Mr. Right Now" appeared on 21 Savage's Savage Mode II. This song, which peaked at 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, sparked a lot of conversation due to a lyric where Drake revealed that he dated singer SZA back in 2008.
The duo partnered up on Drake's Certified Lover Boy a year later, making "Knife Talk." This song became popular and reached 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. The most recent track from these two came this past summer, when "Jimmy Cooks" dropped as part of Honestly, Nevermind. This song was a complete switch up of the album's tone, and "Jimmy Cooks" being placed at the end of the tracklist could have been a hint towards Drake and 21 Savage linking up for this album. Some people regard this duet as the best of all the music they have made together, and it reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
This partnership is only one of many iconic rap duos Drake has been a part of. He has commonly made music with Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, and 2 Chainz. Drake and Future had their own collaboration with the mixtape What a Time To Be Alive in 2015.
Drake is coming off the release of Honestly, Nevermind in June 2022. This album featured many tracks with a club-type dance beat and received mixed reviews from the general public. The standout track from this album was "Jimmy Cooks," which contained a completely different vibe than the rest of the songs.
The last release from 21 Savage came in October 2020 with Savage Mode II. This was the sequel of his 2016 EP Savage Mode, which helped put him on the map. Both of these albums are a collaboration with producer "Metro Boomin". This album's collaboration with Drake, "Mr. Right Now," wasn't seen as one of the album's top songs but is considered a solid follow-up to their previous team-up.
Fans online have gotten into speculation about Drake's past few albums, and if a trilogy has been forming all along. Twitter user @tervisscoot said that "Drake was a Certified Lover Boy. But Honestly, Nevermind, that's Her Loss." This may be a stretched assumption, but it will be interesting to see how and if this new album ties into Certified Lover Boy and Honestly, Nevermind.
Stay tuned for more updates about Her Loss by Drake and 21 Savage and a review when the album releases on November 4th.
