Godspeed You! Black Emperor @ The Bluebird 9/21

Montreal, Quebec, Canada-based experimental post-rock collective Godspeed You! Black Emperor will be performing at the Bluebird (216 North Walnut) on Monday, Sept. 21. The group, active since 1993 with a lengthy hiatus from 2003 until 2010, is hot off the release of their critically acclaimed album Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress, issued earlier this year on the Canadian post-rock mainstay Constellation Records.

While fairly active since their triumphant return to full time touring in 2012 with the release of Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend!, GY!BE mastermind Efrim Menuck and a rotating cast of musicians have yet to play Bloomington, making this show one of the most anticipated of this year for indie enthusiasts. The band’s dark instrumental crescendos and long, patient songs, not unalike from post-rock heroes Explosions in the Sky or MONO, have helped curate a cult following that worships the genre-defining body of work, which extends into the hip collegiate concert-goers of Bloomington.
Joining Godspeed You! Black Emperor on this national tour is Xylouris White, an internationally-based lute and percussion duo. They blur the lines between pop and world music using instruments most people would only see at the Lotus Festival. On this year’s Goats, their only album thus far, Xylouris White wish to take listeners all over the world and back home again, making the duo a welcome addition to what is already an impassioned and eclectic show.

Tickets are $25 at the door and the show is 21+.
