Music blog Consequence of Sound states, “Movement reflects the will of Detroit. No matter how many times the area can be pulled through the gutter, there is a sense of pride and hope that a resurgence is only some hard-work away.” The Detroit Electronic Movement Festival is one of the biggest music festivals held in the Detroit area. It started out as a free festival for anyone to come and enjoy electronic music. In its first years, back in the beginning of the 2000s, the festival brought in approximately 1.3 million people. The huge attendance rate ended up bringing in almost $90 million to the city of Detroit, and because of this economic boost they have continued the festival ever since.
This upcoming Memorial Day weekend (May 23 – 25), Detroit will be hosting its 15th DEMF. In past years big name artists such as Benny Benassi, Deadmau5, Moby, Girl Talk, Flying Lotus, and Bass Nectar have all joined many other DJs/artists to bring some craziness to this rave. The 2015 DEMF bill features more than 140 artists performing over three days, breaking the record for the festival's largest lineup. These artists come from all around the world with artists from Germany, Japan, various South American countries, and of course the United States. Popularartists that are performing include Disclosure, Matador, Catz ‘N Dogz, Soul Clap, Shigeto, and many more. There will also be a few bands and hip hop artists performing which are Danny Brown, ! ! !, Ataxia, and also a tag team of Snoop Dog, Skrillex, and Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man. So if you’ve been craving to be blinded by bright lights and feel your chest bump from some aggressive bass, then DEMF is for you my friend!
I wouldn’t call myself the biggest electronic music fan in the world, but it has always interested me. I’ve lived in the Detroit area for my whole life and have never actually been to Movement. I will be representing WIUX at this event and hope to chat with a couple artists and music fans about what makes DEMF such a great experience. By the end of this weekend I hope to walk away with a better understanding of the electronic movement that is happening all over the world.
If you are interested in going, a 3-Day pass is $150, and Single Day passes are $75. The festival is held along the Detroit River at Hart Plaza. You can get more information about the festival from their website below.
