Short Takes
Josh Handszer:
New York Giants (ranked them 20th): Another tumultuous season is almost in the books for Big Blue, but despite their sub-par record, rookie wide-out Odell Beckham Jr. has made the team fun to watch in recent weeks. With eight straight games of 90 receiving yards or more, OBJ will look to continue that trend this week against the Eagles in the season finale at MetLife Stadium. Beckham has emerged as one of the elite receivers in the league, which could pose a serious problem for the Birds – who have given up a combined 10 catches for 240 yards and three touchdowns to Dez Bryant and DeSean Jackson in the past two weeks. Oddly enough, Beckham, perhaps the most electrifying player in the league, wasn’t selected to the Pro Bowl, which, in the words of NFL.com reporter Judy Battista, “might be the last time I’ll type that for the next decade.”
Indianapolis (ranked them 10th): My co-host on the Monday Evening Power Hour, Matt Randall, has been telling us for weeks that the Colts just aren’t that good as we’ve made them out to be this season. If anything, last week’s performance – sorry, ROUT – by the Cowboys certainly proved that point. The Colts haven’t been at all too impressive in their last few contests. Throw in that Sunday was the worst game of Andrew Luck’s career, and you’ve got a team limping towards the finish line. They’ll still pose a threat in the AFC playoff picture, but this is not the ideal way that the Colts wanted to finish the season.
Quinn Saturday:
Arizona (ranked them 9th): First of all congrats to Calais Campbell on being selected to his first Pro Bowl. That was way overdue and much deserved. Now on to the team: in the words of legendary sports writer Bob Ryan, “they stink!” The team absolutely collapsed against Seattle and while Ryan Lindley is responsible for the lack of scoring, that gives the defense no excuse to just allow the Seahawks to make big play after play. The defense needs to realize that they have to play its absolute best until Drew Stanton can return. Otherwise he won’t return because the season will be over.
Seattle (ranked them 1st): No disrespect to the Patriots, whom everyone else selected as their number one team, but the defending champs are rolling again and should be considered the favorites going into the playoffs. While they did have the easy task of facing Lindley last week, the much more impressive thing they did was put up 35 points on the Cards’ stout defense in Arizona. After the Percy Harvin trade it was believed the Seahawks wouldn’t have enough offense to compete, but Russell Wilson has become an elite quarterback. It literally does not matter who Wilson has to throw to as he will get the best out of his receiver no matter what. It pains me to say it, but the Seahawks have a great chance at repeating as long as they have Wilson.
Andrew Vailliencourt:
Detroit/Green Bay (ranked them 4th and 5th respectively): Both teams squeaked by bad teams despite playing pretty sloppy. Now in Week 17, they meet to battle it out for the NFC North title and a likely No. 2 seed. It’s the biggest regular season game in the last 20 years for the Lions. Can their great defense hold up against Aaron Rodgers?
Arizona (ranked them 11th): I feel bad for the Cardinals, because they won’t be able to win any playoff games with Logan Thomas or Ryan Lindley at QB. Maybe they should dial up Kurt Warner, or dare I say Tim Tebow?
Tori Ziege:
Dallas (ranked them 3rd): The ‘Boys are back. And I’m talking way back, to the days of Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin. The new triplets are Tony Romo (who just broke Aikman’s record for Cowboys all-time passing leader), DeMarco Murray and Dez Bryant, and the rest of the NFC should be scared. These Cowboy are gunning for a Conference Championship.
San Diego (ranked them 11th): These Chargers pulled off one hell of a comeback against their in-state foe last weekend and put themselves in the driver’s seat for their end-of-the-season match-up with the Kansas City Chiefs. With come-from-behind wins against the 49ers and Rams, this team has proven it can win at gut-check time, and I expect tothe New Year to bring these Chargers a playoff spot.
