Short Takes

ZakBerliner:

Oakland (ranked them 26th): Aside from their Week 13 loss to the Rams (52-0), the Raiders have actually played well since Week 11. The team has earned its first two wins of the season in that range of time, and both the offense and defense have been good enough for Oakland to be considered best of the bottom fourth.

San Diego (ranked them 10th): The Chargers have had some weeks where their offense was solid, like last week against the Ravens. The defense has been good every week, culminating in its successful containment of Tom Brady and the Patriots. If the Charger offense can have more consistency, San Diego has the potential to go far in the playoffs.

Quinn Saturday:

Arizona (ranked them 5th): The injuries continue to pile up and now the Cards have a very short week as they face the Rams Thursday night in St. Louis. The good news is that Arizona prevented a potential dangerous six-game losing streak that would have devastated the franchise after starting so well. It will still be a challenge with three games left against the NFC West, but the Cards should have more confidence moving forward.

St. Louis (ranked them 14th): Back-to-back shutouts and now they get a banged up Cardinals offense?! While the shutout streak will probably end this week, the Rams are playing just as well as anyone and have a really good chance to end the season either .500 or better. Just imagine how good this team would have been if Sam Bradford wasn’t made of glass?

Andrew Vailliencourt:

Indianapolis (ranked them 8th): The Colts should be very thankful they have Andrew Luck. He’s great QB in this league and belongs in the same group as Rodgers, Manning, Brady and Brees. The only other great player he has is TY Hilton. Without Luck, this team might be 4-9 instead of 9-4.

Atlanta (ranked them 21st): This team will likely make the playoffs— which is sad. The NFL needs to make a rule in the off-season stating that you must at least finish .500 to make the playoffs as a division winner. Atlanta did play very well in the second half against the Packers, as Julio Jones caught fire, but whoever grabs the fifth seed in the NFC should be very happy no matter what NFC South opponent it ends up facing.

Will DeWitt:

Pittsburgh (ranked them 10th): The Steelers came into Cincinnati knowing they needed a win, and they found a way to pull out the victory against the Bengals. Le’Veon Bell had three touchdowns in the second half and made a legitimate argument for best back in the league.

St. Louis (ranked them 17th): Did anyone else notice that the Rams have won their last two games by a combined score of 76-0? That’s an impressive stat, and even more impressive is the fact that St. Louis, of all teams, was the one to accomplish it. I doubt the streak will continue as they host the Cardinals this week, but nonetheless, hats off the Rams’ defense.

Tori Ziege:

Denver (ranked them 3rd): I’m not quite sure how I survived the fantasy debacle that was Peyton Manning and Jimmy Graham on Sunday—but I did. And as bad as Manning has been, the Broncos’ survived his worst performance since 2010 thanks to their impressive run game and defense. If Manning can return to last year’s form (and there’s no reason to think he won’t) this team will be scary good.

NFC South (ranked Atlanta 22nd, Carolina 23rd, New Orleans 24th, and Tampa Bay 27th): Does anyone want to win this division? I mean really. Every time it looks like one of these teams is going to step up and play quality football, it falters and takes ten steps back. The only thing consequential happening in the NFC South is giving teams more incentive to fight for the five-seed in the playoffs.
