Short Takes
Zak Berliner:
Arizona (ranked them 12th): Some may be surprised at me having the Cardinals fall from No. 2 last week to No. 12 this week. I tend not to have knee-jerk reactions, but I am seeing a pattern with consecutive bad losses. This team is falling quickly with Drew Stanton at the helm, and I do not see it recovering any time soon.
San Francisco (ranked them 20th): The 49ers have struggled mightily the past few weeks. They have barely been able to beat poor teams and have been crushed by good ones. Like the Cardinals, this team is a sinking ship.
Josh Handszer:
Cleveland (ranked them 18th): FINALLY, it’s Johnny Football time in Cleveland! It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for, and after an encouraging performance on Sunday—although granted it was a small sample size—it’s beginning to look more and more like Manziel will get the nod this week against the Colts. Yes, Brian Hoyer has led the Browns to a remarkable 7-5, but the past two weeks have brought him back down to Earth. Get ready folks, with the season winding down, it’s about to get real interesting in Cleveland.
New York Giants (ranked them 25th): Well, they blew a 21-point lead against the lowly Jaguars – yikes. They haven’t won a game since Oct. 12, but hey, it can’t possibly get any worse this week right? The G-Men take on the 2-10 Titans, who, you guessed it, also haven’t won since Oct. 12. A battle of two really bad teams, the only Giants-related football worth watching is replays of Odell Beckham Jr.’s catch over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
New England (ranked them 2nd): The Patriots suffered two losses this week: first, losing their potential Super Bowl match-up with the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, and second, losing any hope of winning the AFC after taking a picture with Justin Bieber. To quote Jemele Hill, that’s the kiss of death right there. Let’s see if New England can kill the Curse of the Biebs.
Quinn Saturday:
Arizona (ranked them 5th): There was always a collective fear among Cardinals fans that this magical ride could end and burst into flames at any moment. Although I fear we may be close to that happening, I also believe Bruce Arians will prevent this team from falling apart. This week’s test against the struggling Chiefs may be the Cards’ the best chance to try and turn things around.
Seattle ranked them 6th): I’m still not sold on the Seahawks’ offense being good enough to make them Super Bowl contenders, but their defense is playing the best it has all season, and as long as that continues, this team be a lock for the playoffs.
Andrew Vailliencourt:
Seattle (ranked them 5th): They’re back. The Seahawks have looked dominant the past two weeks, and that’s especially bad for the Cardinals who haven’t looked the same in last two games and the 49ers who the Seahawks just pounded. The defense is on fire, led by none other than Richard Sherman. That’s what happens when you face a sorry quarterback like Colin Kaepernick.
Buffalo (ranked them 12th): The Bills continue to surprise people, and are right in the thick of the wild card race in the AFC. After a big win over the Browns, can Kyle Orton keep getting it done in the stretch run?
Will DeWitt:
Green Bay (ranked them 1st): No team is hotter than Green Bay right now. Beating the Patriots catapults them into the top spot this week.
Arizona (ranked them 9th): Injuries are starting to be a concern for the Cardinals. Arizona has done well combating them this season, but losing Andre Ellington could be the dagger.
Tori Ziege:
Green Bay (ranked them 1st): Looking at the Packers’ recent body of work, it’s impossible not to put them at No. 1. They blew out the Eagles (my No. 4) and staved off the Patriots (my No. 2) in a tough contest. After Sunday, I would be more than happy to see a New England- Green Bay match-up in the Super Bowl.
Detroit (ranked them 7th): Detroit finally shook its old ways of tanking in the waning weeks of the regular season, and I’m giving them credit for it. The Lions might not catch Green Bay for the division title, but win their next three games, and their playoff berth should be all but secure.
