Short Takes
Josh Handszer:
Philadelphia (ranked them 5th): Talk about unexpected! Mark Sanchez – yes, that same Mark Sanchez who committed the infamous butt fumble – threw two touchdowns for 332 yards with no interceptions in Monday night’s win over the Panthers. It was the first time in his career he’s thrown for over 300 yards without a turnover. In his past two contests, he’s looked more like the fifth overall pick than he ever has. Eat your heart out, Jets fans
Cleveland (ranked them 11th): The Browns now stand at 6-3, and didn’t just beat the Bengals on Thursday night – they routed them for Ohio supremacy. Brian Hoyer, while not fantastic, has been more than serviceable at the helm. This should quiet things down for those clamoring for Johnny Manziel to get his turn. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Things seem to be on the up and up for Cleveland.
Quinn Saturday:
Arizona (ranked them 3rd): I was surprised to see I was the only one to move the Cardinals down in their rankings after the injury to Carson Palmer. While I don’t believe that the loss of Palmer will prevent the Cardinals from having a chance at a home Super Bowl, the margin of error is significantly slimmer with Drew Stanton at the helm, especially if anything happened to Stanton (knock on wood). The fact is that the Cardinals are 8-0 this season when either Palmer/Stanton FINISH the game. The lone loss came when Logan Thomas was involved. The defense is starting to fire on all cylinders, and Larry Fitzgerald has had 100+ receiving yards in two of the past three weeks to show he’s still one of the best. As long as the offense doesn’t shoot itself in the foot, they’ll be fine, but for the time being I would pick both the Patriots and the Broncos in a game against the Cards.
Cleveland (ranked them 15th): I was pleasantly surprised by the Browns dismantling of the Bengals, but what gives me pause is the inconsistency of both Cleveland and Cincinnati’s performances. Actually if you think about it, the Browns have been consistent to a certain extent: they play to the level of their competition. In their past five games, the Browns destroyed Pittsburgh (W 31-10), were manhandled by Jacksonville (L 24-6), squeaked by two of the worst teams in the league (W 23-13 vs Oakland, W 22-17 vs Tampa Bay), and then obliterated Cincinnati (W 24-3). This week’s matchup against middle-of-the-road Houston should tell us a lot more about the Browns as their opponent will neither be someone to be afraid of nor someone to take for granted. If the Browns can beat them handedly I’ll reconsider my ranking and move them to the top 10.
Andrew Vailliencourt:
Arizona/Detroit (ranked them 1st and 3rd respectively): I am grouping these two together because who would’ve ever thought we would see these two teams play each other in week 11 for the No. 1 seed in the NFC? These teams are for real, although the Cardinals will struggle to stay atop the standings with Drew Stanton as their starter for the rest of the year. The Lions have the top ranked defense in the NFL, are the only team allowing less than 300 yards per game, and have allowed the least amount of points in the league. Oh, and they just got Megatron back from injury.
Chicago (ranked them 28th): Now I never believed in the Bears and pictured them as an 8-8 team entering the year, but it isn’t just the record that would have me furious if I was a Chicago fan. The Bears have looked atrocious the past several weeks, and they had a bye to prepare for Green Bay. The defense has been terrible; the offense has fallen apart. The team has allowed the most points in the league, and Jay Cutler doesn’t look like he remembers how to play football. Give the Packers credit because they played fantastic, and Aaron Rodgers is doing his thing, but the Bears made them look better than they are.
Will DeWitt:
Arizona (ranked them 2nd): Deja Vu? Carson Palmer goes down with an injury again, but this time it is for the remainder of the season. Bruce Arians needs to keep the team focused. Even with Drew Stanton under center, this is still a playoff contending team.
San Diego (ranked them 18th): What happened?! It was a few short weeks ago I ranked this team #1 and since then the Chargers have ‘bolted’ their way right out of the top ten. Teams like this is why some people believe that NFL stands for ‘Not For Long’. This past week was San Diego’s bye week and it could not have come at a better time. The Chargers need to regroup and play the type of football we saw during October.
Tori Ziege:
Cleveland (ranked them 11th): It’s still difficult for me to fathom that the CLEVELAND BROWNS are 6-3 and have sole possession of the AFC North. Oh, it’s difficult for you, too? Then let me repeat: the Cleveland Browns are 6-3 and have sole possession of the AFC North. Those are facts. Forget LeBron. Maybe Brian Hoyer is the chosen one.
Pittsburgh (ranked them 12th): Pittsburgh beats the Colts and Ravens by a combined 37 points in Weeks 9 and 10, and then loses to the Jets in Week 11? Does not compute.
