Short Takes
ZakBerliner:
New England (ranked them 3rd): The Patriots have been absolutely unreal these past few weeks, concluding with a domination of my No. 1 team, the Broncos. This team is scary good right now.
San Diego (ranked them 18th): The Chargers are in the midst of a drastic skid, especially with a 37-0 loss to the Dolphins. San Diego desperately needs this coming bye week to have any shot at reversing this losing streak.
Josh Handszer:
New England (ranked them 1st): Tom Brady is Tom Brady again. The Patriots now have two straight games in which the offense has dropped 40+ points on elite teams (Bears & Broncos). No one can stop Brady right now, and the Patriots look like they can beat anyone. Enough said.
Philadelphia (ranked them 7th): With Nick Foles sidelined with a collarbone injury, the Eagles are turning things over to New York’s favorite son, Mark Sanchez. While he played well coming in after Foles’ departure, 2 TDs with 2 INTs, it’s hard to be optimistic for this team with Sanchez at the helm going forward. For this Giants fan, here’s to hoping this will be the last time the Eagles are in the top 10.
Quinn Saturday:
Arizona (ranked them 1st): This ranking may feel biased and probably is, the Patriots did look really good dismantling the Broncos, but I feel the Cards have earned to be called the best team in the NFL at the mid-point of the season. With no Dockett, Washington, or Abraham the defense has still remained one the NFL’s best against the run as proven when they became the first team this season to limit DeMarco Murray to under 100 yards. The offense has also had to play three games without starter Carson Palmer, with the only loss on the season coming in Denver when the Cards were down to their third-string rookie QB and still were within four points before the Broncos ran up the score. The only thing Arizona is missing on its resume is a blowout win similar to what New England has against the Bears and Broncos. The Cards aren’t necessarily built to “destroy their opponents” as much as “wear them out” but until the Cards are able to do the former it looks like I will remain in the minority in thinking the Cards should be number one.
Miami (ranked them 9th): I may have ranked the Dolphins a little too high, but I honestly feel they could end the season as a top 10 team. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill is really starting to come into his own as he has thrown 10 touchdowns to only four interceptions the past five weeks (much improved from his 36 TDs and 30 INTs in his first two seasons) and has eclipsed 40+ rushing yards in the past four games. But the main story is an exceptional defense that just blanked one of the best offenses in the NFL in the Chargers. On the year, the Dolphins are allowing the third least amount of offensive yards and points in the NFL and only Kansas City allows fewer passing yards. If Tannehill continues to improve and the Miami defense continues dominate, we’ll be seeing the Dolphins in the playoffs for the first time since 2008.
Andrew Vailliencourt:
San Francisco (ranked them 20th): The Jim Harbaugh to Michigan rumors gain more traction with every 49er loss. A bad loss to the Rams will make it tough to make a playoff push.
New York Giants, New York Jets (ranked them 27th and 30th respectively): Insert fart noise
Pittsburgh (ranked them 7th): I dogged this team earlier this season, but Big Ben is playing out of his mind, and the defense led again by James Harrison is getting better and better. Big win over the Ravens on Sunday.
Will DeWitt:
Arizona (ranked them 2nd): The Cardinals have the best record in the NFL and with their victory over Dallas they have officially swept the entire NFC East division. Throughout the season, the Cardinals have proved they can play against elite competition.
Philadelphia (ranked them 6th): Hello Mark Sanchez! After starter Nick Foles left due to injury, Sanchez led the Eagles to victory over the Texans. Sanchez threw for two touchdowns in a single game for the first time since 2012, and no, he did not “butt fumble”.
Tori Ziege:
New England (ranked them 1st): Last week I ranked the Patriots the lowest out of any contributor because I didn’t want to be that fan, you know, the one who talks up her team too much before it beats a quality opponent. Well, the quality opponent came into Foxborough on Sunday in the form of the Denver Broncos, and the Patriots absolutely throttled them. Brady looked like he could march into Glendale and take his fourth Super Bowl ring. It’s amazing the adjustments Bill Belichick has been able to make in the five short games since the Kansas City blowout. This team looks refreshed, rejuvenated, and oh yeah-- it gets a bye this week so it can keep on getting healthier
Pittsburgh (ranked them 6th): Wow, didn’t know Big Ben still had it in him. Dismantling your division rival (and scoring an NFL record 12 touchdowns in two games) is enough to earn you a big shift in the power rankings. This is another team that after an ugly loss to the Tampa Bay Bucs, I would have never guessed they could be a top-10 team. I had a hard time deciding between the Steelers and Colts for the six spot, but gave the nod to Pittsburgh because of the head-to-head win and the fact that the Colts had some trouble with the run game on MNF.
