Short Takes

Zak Berliner:

San Diego (ranked them 4th): I think the Chargers have been one of the most impressive teams this year. Between offense and defense, they are one of the most complete teams in the NFL.

New England (ranked them 25th): The Patriots, between a loss to Miami, struggling to beat the Raiders, and being demolished by the Chiefs, are absolutely abysmal, especially compared to the standards up in Foxborough.

Josh Handszer:

New York Giants (ranked them 13th): A lot of people may have had the Giants a little further down, but after his most recent performance (28/39, 300 YDS, 4 TD) Eli Manning seems to finally be figuring out the team’s new offense.

Houston Texans (ranked them 18th): They’re a lot higher in most power rankings, and understandably so at 3-1 – but consider the cupcakes they’ve beaten this year: Washington, Oakland, and Buffalo. Let’s see if they’re for real this week against the Cowboys at JerryWorld.

Quinn Saturday:

Arizona (ranked them 1st): I’ll admit I’m bias but this ranking isn’t irrational. The first three opponents of the Cardinals’ season (San Diego, NY Giants, and San Francisco) are a combined 7-2 when you take away their losses to the Cards. What’s more is that they have done this while being very unlucky in the injury department. The Cards won’t be winning any championships with Drew Stanton leading the way but they could with a healthy Carson Palmer. Also know that the comeback wins aren’t flukes: teams can’t put away the Cards because they can’t run the ball on them as Arizona’s run defense only allows 2.8 yards a carry, giving the Cards multiple chances to get the ball back and score.

Indianapolis (ranked them 13th): I honestly believe this team is better than 13th but I placed them there because they haven’t really proven anything yet. They’ve beaten the teams they should (Jacksonville and Tennessee) and have lost close ones to really good teams (Denver and Philadelphia). This week’s game at home against a 3-1 Baltimore will provide us with exactly what we need: an opinion , whether positive or negative, about the Colts.

Andrew Vailliencourt:

San Francisco (ranked them 12th): The 49ers got themselves a season saving win on Sunday against the Eagles. They have talent, and they have the coaching, but in a division as tough as the NFC West they will have to continue to get big wins if they want to land back in the playoffs.

Detroit (ranked them 5th): This is the best team in the NFC North which is one of the best division’s in football. The addition of Golden Tate has proven to be huge on Sunday when Megatron was not 100% healthy. Last year the Lions would have lost that game. With the Packers and Bears being so inconsistent, this can be Detroit’s year.

Will DeWitt:

San Diego (ranked them 4th): San Diego has a top five defense and even though they are depleted at running back, Rivers is playing as well as any QB right now.

Arizona (ranked them 5th): As the only undefeated team in the NFC, this week’s game versus the Broncos will prove if the Cardinals can play with the big boys.

Tori Ziege:

Philadelphia (ranked them 6th): A puzzling performance by the Eagles in Week 4—where the offense failed to score a touchdown and turned the ball over four times—further instills the lurking doubts in my mind regarding this team. Though Philadelphia kept its game with San Fran close to the end, this one didn’t fall the Eagles way. Is this team fated to play all its games in nail-biting fashion? I need to see a statement win over the Rams in Week 5 in order to gain some confidence back in Chip Kelly and Co.

New England (ranked them 16th): The Pats look lost after a demoralizing loss to Chiefs on Monday Night Football. But we saw this coming. The O-Line is inexperienced, the offense is out of sync, and the defense—which was supposed to be revamped thanks to the off season acquisition of Darrelle Revis—has underperformed. And yet, this team hasn’t lost back to back games since Weeks 2 and 3 of 2012, and I can’t see this team losing at home, despite a daunting match-up with Cincinnati this week. Brady and Belichick always prevail, somehow, and will be looking to prove something after the worst performance by New England in recent memory.
