Single Watch

Several artists have recently put out singles, promoting albums that are to be released in the spring and early summer. These are the singles worth taking a second listen.

Crown the Pines-S. Carey

The lush instrumental texture that opens up S. Carey’s latest single will sound reminiscent of the band S. Carey has lent his drumming talents to for years now, Bon Iver. However, this track along with others that have been recently released under locally based label Jagjaguwar, prove that S. Carey is poised for a breakout 2014. “Crown the Pines” uses Carey’s layered vocals to build up an emotional concentration that suddenly crashes down into a beautiful chorus. Using his intense yet intimate sound, Range of Light, Carey’s sophomore album which is slated for an April 1 release, is one that is sure to score big with fans of artists such as Sufjan Stevens, Fleet Foxes and the aforementioned Bon Iver.

Brother-Mac DeMarco

In his latest single off Salad Days, “Brother”, Culture Shock Headliner Mac DeMarco, combines the strengths of his first two albums to produce this wonderful track. Dual guitars kick off the song in a dreamscape sounding like something straight off of Rock and Roll Night Club, but his vocals tell the story in a more polished way making it sound exactly like a cut off of 2012’s 2. DeMarco feels conversant in his tone when singing, “This much is true, but it’s still up to you to take my advice. So, take it slowly brother/ Let it go now, brother.” This deeply smooth song engulfs you as a listener and DeMarco’s advice becomes a sort of easing lullaby to the audiences stresses.
DeMarco’s junior album, Salad Days, is also due out April 1st via Captured Tracks.
