Short Takes

Zak Berliner:

Cleveland (ranked them 20th): Though the Browns have looked impressive at times this season, it is concerning that they needed a last minute score in order to edge out the lowly Titans. However, the fact that this team was still able to win that game does show that Cleveland is competitive, unlike past seasons.

Cincinnati (ranked them 7th): After the Bengals, last week's No. 1 team according to these rankings, were blown out by the Patriots 43-17, I realized that Cincinnati really has not been that spectacular up to this point in the season. The Broncos, Seahawks and Chargers have all performed much, much better than the Bengals so far.

Josh Handszer:

Denver (ranked them 2nd): I really, really, really wanted to put the Broncos first after seeing how they dismantled the previously undefeated Arizona Cardinals this past weekend. Peyton was Peyton, 31/47 for 479 YDS and 4 TDs–but perhaps the stud of this game was Demaryius Thomas and his eight catches for 226 yards and two TDs. I don’t think you could go wrong flip-flopping them and Seattle, but since the Seahawks are the defending champs, they’ll get the top spot–for now.

Philadelphia (ranked them 10th): It’s weird how this team keeps finding ways to win games despite its lack of a run game. Nick Foles has been less than stellar, and hello, can anybody find LeSean McCoy? Yes, he had a good performance this past weekend: 81 YDs and 24 carries, but to say McCoy has been inconsistent would be an understatement. It might be time for the Eagles to file a missing person report before this weekend’s match-up with the resurgent New York Giants.

Quinn Saturday:

Arizona (ranked them 6th): The final score may have been a blowout, but while Drew Stanton was still in the game, so were the Cardinals. The actual reason for the much lower ranking compared to last week is because of the fear that injuries may have finally caught up to them. More key players, such as Calais Campbell who will be out for a couple of weeks, and the offense is down to its third-string quarterback Logan Thomas. Luckily the Cards have been blessed with the Redskins and Raiders as their next two opponents, which should give both Carson Palmer and/or Drew Stanton enough time to come back without much worry about falling in the NFC West standings.

St. Louis (ranked them 28th): Even though I have them ranked really low, I still admire their spirit. Down 34-7 late in the third quarter, everyone would have understood if the Rams just regrouped and looked ahead to next week. Yet they scored three straight touchdowns and had the ball with two minutes left and a chance to win the game. They fell short, but the fact it even got that close speaks to the heart of Austin Davis and this young Rams team.

Andrew Vailliencourt:

Pittsburgh (ranked them 20th): I can’t figure this team out. I don’t believe the Steelers are a good team, and they struggled to beat a terrible Jaguars team. Pittsburgh is very up and down so far, and I don’t envision this team finishing above .500.

Dallas (ranked them 6th): After a bad loss to start the year, the Cowboys have quietly rebounded to a 4-1 mark. They beat down the Saints on national television and won a tough game in overtime against an underrated Texans team. If they can limit mistakes, they can challenge the Eagles for the division.

Will DeWitt:

Cincinnati (ranked them 4th): Tough loss to Brady and Co. but still see this as a solid Bengals team headed forward.

Green Bay (ranked them 6th): Packers had two blowout wins against division opponents

Tori Ziege:

New England (ranked them 9th): One embarrassing loss does not a bad team make. Tom Brady had a fire in his eyes Sunday night that could mean trouble for opponents if it stays lit for the rest of the season. The development of the run game and tight end Tim Wright-- in addition to keeping Brady safe in the pocket-- are New England’s keys to victory moving forward.

New Orleans (ranked them 23rd): New Orleans may have beaten Tampa Bay in overtime, but it doesn’t get points for scraping by the Bucs in a game where Drew Brees threw three picks and Jimmy Graham sustained a potentially troubling injury. This team just keeps falling.
