This Thursday brings a night of indie folk delight to downtown Bloomington as the timeless trio The Mountain Goats, fronted by wordsmith John Darnielle, perform at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. The Mountain Goats previously graced Bloomington in 2013 when they also played at the Buskirk-Chumley. The great folk troupe has always been known for their emotional & energetic live show & Darnielle’s infectious frontman personality.
The Mountain Goats are currently touring behind last year’s excellent Beat the Champ, a concept album about professional wrestling. Pro wrestling is dear to Darnielle’s heart–alongside his other adorations like metal & the band Ace of Base. This show will be somewhat of a homecoming, as John Darnielle was actually born in Bloomington even though the band is based in North Carolina.
From recent set lists, it looks like we can expect the band to be playing a career-spanning set while also trying out some new songs they’re testing out for a rumored upcoming album. If you keep your fingers crossed, maybe they’ll play the classic “The Best Ever Death Metal Band Out Of Denton.”
The opening act is the Australian folk duo Oh Pep!. Oh Pep! released their debut album, the poppy Stadium Cake, back in June.
Tickets are still available here and are $25 for general admission seating.
